Escape from Lucifer

The crew of the CCCP Alexei Leonov (Алексе́й Лео́нов) devised a plan to use the USSC Discovery One (USSA XD-1) as a "booster rocket", enabling them to return to Earth ahead of schedule. They made a hasty exit from Jupiter, observing as the swarm of monoliths spread to engulf Jupiter increasing it's density until the planet achieves nuclear fusion, becoming a small star.
It is still unexplained that, as Jupiter was about to nova, the HAL-9000 computer onboard the Discovery began repeatedly broadcasting the message "ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE. USE THEM TOGETHER. USE THEM IN PEACE".(is suppused that it had something to do with the Monolith). The creation of the new star, which Earth eventually names "Lucifer", destroyed the Discovery entirely.
